Al Haq International Law Summer School 2016

summer_school_2016On 07 September 2016, Al-Haq Center for Applied International Law concluded its Second International Law Summer School. The objective of the summer school, which was held in Ramallah, Palestine on 24 August- 07 September 2016, is to help participants develop a coherent understanding of the human rights and human situation in the occupied Palestinian territory (OPT). The summer school was a huge success and was attended by 20 international professionals from 18 different countries. Participants of this summer school were chosen out of over 150 applicants.line-height: 115%; font-family: Cambria, serif;">The school included 25 presentations on 24 different topics from 30 local and international organizations operating in the OPT and Israel.

Next to presentations held at Al Haq Center for Applied International Law in Ramallah, many excursions were organized. Among others, 18 organizations were visited and 9 field visits were organized to the Bethlehem area, Jerusalem area, Naqab, Haifa area, Nazareth area, Galilee and Nablus area.

Presentations by a total of 40 different speakers covered during the summer school included Al Haq’s mandate and working methods, historical overview of the conflict, international human rights normative framework applicable in the OPT, international humanitarian law normative framework applicable in the OPT, current human rights situation and developments in the OPT, family unification and child registration, international environmental law, business and human rights, depopulated Palestinian villages, Palestinian citizens of Israel and the Palestinian national strategy.

Additionally, 4 cultural events were organized including a hike in the desert, a theatre play and folklore music.

This summer school is part of Al Haq’s ongoing objective to encourage and facilitate the engagement of international law in the OPT. Al-Haq is an independent Palestinian non-governmental human rights organization based in Ramallah, West Bank. Established in 1979 to protect and promote human rights and the rule of law in the OPT. The organization conducts research; human rights education; prepares reports, studies and interventions on breaches of international human rights and humanitarian law in the OPT; and undertakes advocacy before local, regional and international bodies.

Al Haq has a unique international reputation for human rights education and research, earned through decades of highly respected training of human rights professionals and a commitment to the study and practice of human rights.
