On Monday, 23 September 2019, Al-Haq and partner organisations BADIL Resource Center for Palestinian Residency and Refugee Rights, the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR), Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS), and Habitat International Coalition – Housing and Land Rights Network (HIC-HLRN), will organise a side event and short film screening at the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council in Geneva, titled “Gaza 2020: Uninhabitable.”
The side event, organised at the margins of the 42nd regular session of the UN Human Rights Council under agenda item 7 on the human rights situation in Palestine and other occupied Arab territories, will seek to highlight the unliveable situation created in the occupied Gaza Strip as a result of Israel’s prolonged closure. The side event will also include a screening of a new short film by Al-Haq on the Gaza closure and will include key recommendations to third States and the UN on the urgent need to bring the Gaza closure to an end.
Notably, since 2012, the UN has warned that Gaza will become uninhabitable by 2020. In March 2019, the UN Commission of Inquiry on the 2018 protests in the occupied Palestinian territory called on Israel, the Occupying Power, to bring its 12-year closure of the Gaza Strip to an end with immediate effect. The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has a mandate, pursuant to Human Rights Council Resolution 40/13, as adoptedon 22 March 2019, to ensure the implementation of the recommendationsof the UN Commission of Inquiry on the Great Return March. Third States have a responsibility to cooperate to bring the unlawful situation to an end.
