Affidavit No. 5007/2009

Sworn Statement

After having been warned to tell the truth and nothing but the truth or else I shall be subjected to penal action, I, the undersigned, Hamza Ghaleb Hasan Jaradat, of Palestinian nationality, holder of ID No. 901217661, born on 4 August 1975, a worker and a resident of al-Sila al-Harithiyya town, Jenin governorate, would like to declare the following:

I live in the town of al-Sila al-Harithiyya, West of Jenin City. I am married to Falastin „Abd-al-Razeq Jaradat, 26-years-old, and am the father of four children: Hiba 12-years-old, Yafa 11-years-old, Tawalba six-years-old, and Anas, who was born on 8 May 2007. Anas is now two–years- old.

When Anas was six months old, he began suffering from an illness that doctors have so far been unable to diagnose. My son‟s temperature becomes as high as 41 Celsius for a period of approximately ten hours every day. The temperature drops only after we do our best to reduce it. We use fever reducing suppositories and pour cold water on him until his temperature drops. My son Anas has been suffering from this unknown health condition for a year and a half. During this time, I have taken my son to many physicians, hospitals and medical centres throughout the West Bank. However, no one could identify the causes of his disease. In their medical reports, doctors only said that my son suffered from an “unknown fever”.

Dr. Fida‟ Abu-al-Hayja‟, a paediatrician, requested that she diagnose my son. She also requested that special medical examinations be conducted at al-Maqased Hospital in the occupied city of Jerusalem, which is isolated behind the Separation Wall. These medical examinations can only be made at al-Maqased Hospital. To access the hospital, I have to obtain a permit to enter the city of Jerusalem from the Israeli occupying authorities.

So far, my wife and I have submitted 15 applications for a permit to travel to Jerusalem. Nonetheless, the Israeli occupying authorities have refused to grant us a permit. I have also submitted an application for my mother, Nadira Suleiman Jaradat (50-years-old), for my mother-in-law Layla Suleiman Jaradat (45-years-old) who is also my aunt. However, the Israeli occupying authorities also refused to grant them permits, under the pretext of security, which is a reason we don‟t understand.

The last time the Israeli authorities refused applications for my wife and I was on Thursday, 16 July 2009. Again, we were denied access to al-Maqased Hospital in order to conduct the necessary medical examinations to determine his condition and prescribe treatment.

It is evident that my son‟s body temperature is high, as he is constantly red in the face, and suffers from slowness of movement. We do not know what to do with the obstinate actions of the Israeli occupying authorities and their refusal to grant us the necessary permits.

I was arrested and detained by the Israeli occupying authorities three years ago (from 2003 through 2006) under administrative detention (arrest without charge or trial). Nevertheless, this is not an excuse to deny a child access to health care facilities. I am afraid that if this situation persists I will lose my son. I need to be able to access al-Maqased Hospital in order to conduct necessary examinations and identify the proper treatment for my son Anas.
