Al-Haq Congratulates Palestinian Center for Human Rights Director Raji Sourani on Receiving the 2013 Alternative Nobel Prize

RajiAl-Haq would like to extend congratulations to Raji Sourani, Director the Palestinian Center for Human Rights, for receiving the 2013 “Alternative Nobel Prize”

The Swedish Right Livelihood Award Foundation announced its decision on 26 September to grant its 2013 annual award, known as “the Alternative Nobel Prize”, to Raji Sourani “for his unwavering dedication to the rule of law and human rights under exceptionally difficult circumstances.” This is the first time that a Right Livelihood Award has been granted to a Palestinian.

The 2013 award was also granted to Paul Walker (USA) “for working tirelessly to rid the world of chemical weapons”, Denis Mukwege (Democratic Republic of Congo) “for his courageous work healing women survivors of war-time sexual violence and speaking up about its root causes” and Hans R. Herren/ Blovision Foundation (Switzerland) “for his expertise and pioneering work in promoting a safe, secure and sustainable global food supply”. In 2013 there were 94 proposals for the Award from 48 countries.

The Awards will be presented at a ceremony in the Swedish Parliament on 2 December 2013 at 4:00 pm.
